the iOS 16.1 update released today introduces support for live activities, a new type of persistent notification on the lock screen that allows you to track information in real time. Live activities are mainly visible on the lock screen, but if you have a iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, also appear in the dynamic island.
Developers are starting to roll out support for live activities and we’ve rounded up the apps that use the new feature.
Tracks (Free with in-app purchases)
The Slopes ski and snowboard app is using Live Activities to let users keep track of two customizable stats, along with information about who else is riding at the resort. It also provides a daily performance timeline. Users can choose stats including vertical distance, speed, number of runs, time spent on the slope, and more.
Support for Dynamic Island is included for iPhone 14 Pro users, offering quick access to tools like pausing and resuming when taking a break.
Frivolous (Free with Premium Option)
Flighty flight tracker app offers live activities to stay on top of upcoming and ongoing flights. The implementation of Live Activity is displayed on the lock screen three hours before a flight and offers the necessary information, such as time until departure, boarding gate, flight status, reservation code, seat number and more.
After takeoff, the app includes an offline progress bar that lets you know how much time is left on a flight. On iPhone 14 Pro models, the Dynamic Island integration provides flight information on top of the iPhone every time there is a critical update as a delay. Dynamic Island live activity also shows the exit countdown and door number while other apps are in use.
Live Activity can be used for free on the first flight, but after that, Pro is required. Flighty Pro is priced at $5.99 per month or $49.99 per year.
Scenery (Free with in-app purchases)
Landscape mountaineering app is using Live Activities on the lock screen and Dynamic Island to provide real-time statistics, with a moving elevation graph so you can keep an eye on your ascent. The app displays elevation, total distance, and more.
The Forest focus and time management app displays countdown times on the lock screen and on the Dynamic Island so you can see how much time you have left on the project you’re working on. Forest is an app where you grow a tree by focusing on a singular task, like studying, without otherwise using your device.
Using the Live Activity option requires disabling deep focus mode, which is the mode that requires the Forest app to remain open, preventing the use of other apps.
Weather CARROT (Free with in-app purchases)
CARROT Weather will show an approaching storm when rain is expected within the next hour. The progress of the storm can be followed on the lock screen or on the Dynamic Island. You will be able to see the next precipitation levels for the next 60 minutes.
Designed for photographers and those who like to follow the sun, Lumy is an application that allows you to know the position of the sun anywhere in the world. Provides information on sunrise, sunset, first light, last light, golden hour, blue hour, moonrise, moonset, and more.
With the integration of Live Activities and Dynamic Island, Lumy users can keep track of any solar event.
Crouton (Free with in-app purchases)
The Crouton recipe and meal planning app uses Live Activities and the Dynamic Island to display recipe timers and steps for each recipe so users can follow each step without having to open the app.
