The new Galaxy S22 phones are packed with great features, but there is one thing that many people wonder: is the Samsung Galaxy S22 series waterproof? What kind of IP rating do these new phones have?

Is the Samsung Galaxy S22 series waterproof?

The Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22 Plus, and Galaxy S22 Ultra have an official IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. This is not a surprise considering that all phones in the Galaxy S21 series from last year also came with IP68 dust and water resistance. However, it is worth noting that the new Galaxy S22 series devices are only waterproof, not waterproof. This is what it means.

What does the IP68 rating mean for the Galaxy S22?

The IP rating, in case you didn’t know, stands for Ingress Protection. In simple terms, IP ratings will tell you how good that particular device is at keeping dust and water out of it. The third character (or the first digit after the I and P characters) tells you how good the device is at protecting against small solid particles, such as dust, sand, and more. This has a maximum rating of 6, where 0 means no protection and 6 indicates completely dust-tight. In some cases, you’ll also see an X here, which essentially means the device hasn’t been tested yet.

Similarly, the last digit indicates the liquid or water resistance rating. It has a maximum rating of 8, which means that the device can be submerged in water for 30 minutes, at a depth of 1.5m. It’s safe to say that IP68 is the highest IP rating for dust and water resistance. This also means that the new Samsung Galaxy S22 series devices have the best IP rating out there.

Being waterproof, on the other hand, means that these phones would be sealed and impervious to water. So they are not completely waterproof, just water resistant. You can go swimming with your new Galaxy S22 series phone or even take it underwater up to 1.5m deep, but we recommend that you do not submerge it in salt or ionized water. So don’t take it to the beach to swim.
