Cassioppi repeats as Brian Keck Preseason Nationals Women’s High School Champion, as 12 ranked wrestlers win titles

DES MOINES, Iowa – Many of the best high school girls in the country were showcased Sunday at the Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals in the 9-12 girls division.

The tournament was packed with nationally ranked fighters, with at least one ranked fighter in each final match, across eight weight classes with both finalists having ratings. This event will impact the upcoming national high school rankings for girls.

In a battle of returning champions, No. 6 angelina casioppi of Illinois stopped No. 14 Angelina Vargas of Missouri, 10-3. Cassioppi dominated on the feet, scoring a tackle in each of the three periods. Cassioppi also scored points late in the third period. Last year, Cassioppi was the champion at 100 pounds, while Vargas won this event at 112 pounds.

At 144 pounds, No. 9 Villa Delise of California defeated returning champion and No. 12 AshLynn Goodwin of Kansas, 11-5. The game was tied 2-2 going into the third period. Villa scored points behind while on top, then the match was decided on the feet. Villa scored a fast break takedown and scored four points with a hip flick in the closing seconds to secure the victory.

No. 27 Caley Graber of Minnesota ended a strong tournament with a first-period pin over No. 12 Katey Valdez of Colorado. Graber scored the first takedown, blocked a 1 1/2 bars from Nelson and spun Valdez for the pin. Graber dominated her opponents, including a big win over No. 2 Valarie Solorio of Pennsylvania.

At 106 pounds, No. 11 Reanah Utterback scored a pin in the second period over No. 10 Chloe Dearwester of Ohio. After a goalless first period, Utterback ran away to lead 1–0. During a fight, Dearwester tried to go over the top, but Utterback pushed her back and secured the fall.

In an all-California final, alexandra waiter he came from behind to defeat No. 15 Presley Anderson, 6-5 at 117 pounds. Anderson led 4-0 in the first period, with a tackle and return points. Waitsman came back strong, with a tackle in the second period. In the third period, Waitsman netted a backhand, cut Anderson, then secured a dunk-winning takedown for the one-point victory.

Claiming the title at 122 pounds he was No. 13 Carissa Qureshi of California, who covered all five of his opponents. Qureshi pinned No. 7 Carley Ceshker of Wisconsin in the final. After a goalless first period, Qureshi was up in the second period. She scored two points on a tilt, then ran a barbell arm to spin and pin Ceshker.

No. 25 Taylor Colangelo of Arizona defeated Cassandra Gonzales of Minnesota, 3-0 in the final at 127 pounds. Colangelo scored the only takedown of the fight in the first period. Gonzales rode Colangelo for the entire second period and most of the third period, cutting Colangelo late in the period. Gonzales failed to score when time ran out.

In a close battle in 132, No. 4 Lauren Walton of Kentucky hit a backhand late in the third period to get past No. 16 Kylie Rule of Wisconsin. With no takedown in the first period, Rule chose neutral and got a takedown, with Walton responding with a backhand to tie it 2-2. Walton got the winning reversal from her with 35 seconds to go.

Ranked No. 2 Valeria Hamilton of Illinois secured a second-period pin over No. 19 Olivia Messerly of Kentucky at 138 pounds. Hamilton was leading 7-0 when he ran a barbell arm and put Messerly on his back, ending the fall. Hamilton was a world under-17 silver medalist last summer.

Another pin hit 152 pounds, when the No. 5 Eduardo Rodrigues of California scored a second-period knockdown over No. 7 Genevieve An of Georgia. Rodrigues led 6-0 with two takedowns and a spin, then ran a half nelson to secure the pin.

No. 7 Naomi Simon of Iowa converted No. 18 Cali Dupree of Missouri twice with a cradle, posting a 10-1 victory in the final at 164 pounds.

No. 16 Faith Macharia of Texas needed a flash-win counter takedown in overtime to get past Wisconsin’s Brooke Huffman in the 180-pound final. Macharia was leading 6-1 early, but Huffman fought back to even the fight in the third period.

number 5 zoé adam of South Dakota was knocked down to start the match at 200 pounds, but scored a backhand then secured a first-period pin over Ella Brown of Iowa at 200 pounds.

Scoring the only two takedowns of the match, Liliana Garcia of Michigan was in control in her 7-1 victory over No. 24 Chloe Hoselton of Illinois at 225 pounds.
